So finally, a post about Beijing! Believe it or not, I’ve lived in Hong Kong practically my whole life (minus a few years in NY) and I’ve never been to Beijing. And while I’m at it, I’ve never even been to Shanghai *GASPSHOCKHORROR*. Well, lucky for me, my Brew&Post grandpa JJ entered into a fun and easy video competition for CNNGo (now called CNN Travel) and won a trip for two to Beijing to stay at Hilton Beijing Wangfujing! Jason also tagged along for the trip to make this a fun fun weekend getaway!
Overall, Beijing is still very traditional to me, with lots of old broken down buildings that were barely partially standing and way too many people. Of course we also visited many of the modern areas like Sanlitun which was basically a branded shopping mecca. The Hilton Beijing Wangfujing was located conveniently not too far from the airport but also just not too far around the corner from Tianeman Square. Although everything was semi close to each other, Beijing’s traffic is no joke and half the day was spent in the car!
As part of the Hilton Experience, CNN Travel hired a whole production team and a film crew to follow JJ (and us as kehlehfehs/extras) around the Hilton Beijing Wangfujing hotel and also around the whole city. Our first day was spent filming around the hotel, experiencing all the different restaurants and cool areas like the indoor pool and we even got to partake in a Peking Duck cooking class at the prestigious Chyna restaurant! That was super fun and although I didn’t want to kiss the duck (you’ll see), it was still crazy enough shoving my hand in its belly to prepare it properly!
Check out all of JJ’s posts on the CNN Travel Blog!
JJ looking coooool at the Beijing airport!
Thanks to Hilton Beijing Wangfujing, we were totally well taken care of! We stayed in a giant suite and was welcomed with yummy macaroons and desserts!
Getting the Peking Duck cooking class started!!
The uncooked but already prepared “DUCKS”. I couldn’t stare at them for too long..lest I get the chillis.
Jason and his duck friends <3
OMGGGGG the chef guy BLOWING into the duck to PUFF IT UP! Turns out this is actually the way they really prepare the duck..so you’re taking in all the lovely chef’s halitosis breathe! After puffing the duck up as much as possible, they use a air pump to FULLY bloat the duck to the max.
Of course JJ was told he had to blow the duck too…lol check out his really unwilling face and me just poking things..
Yay happy with our fully prepared ducks!
After the ducks are all puffed up, they are “pre-cooked” by being doused in hot soup and drenched until the outer layer is semi-cooked. Here we are in the “oven” room with the ducks lined up getting ready to be shoved into that huge oven behind me where they will be..I guess baked until nice and crispy!! Then they go from there, onto a plate, sliced in front of you and right into my BELLY!
After the Peking Duck extravaganza, we experienced more of the hotel.
And headed up to the roof where we found a gaggle of loitering workers hence the fucking gangstah triad bombass outfit pics at the top. Say hi to JJ’s sexy legs!
